Unlocking Self-Confidence by Overcoming Limiting Beliefs

Today, we’re focusing on a powerful topic: self-doubt. For many of us, self-doubt is rooted in limiting beliefs—thoughts that aren’t 100% true but still manage to hold us back.

What Are Limiting Beliefs?

Limiting beliefs are assumptions about ourselves or the world that can undermine our confidence and restrict our growth. They can stem from past experiences, societal expectations, or even our internal fears. Examples include, “I’m too introverted to succeed in networking,” or “I’m not qualified enough for that promotion,” or "A good person would want to say yes to X." These beliefs are not facts, yet we often live as though they are.

Two Questions to Break Free

To challenge these beliefs, start by asking:

First: Is this belief 100% true? Often, our beliefs are rooted in assumptions rather than reality.

Second: Is it serving me? Does this belief help you move forward, or is it holding you back?

Let’s say I believe I’m not qualified enough for a job promotion. By questioning that belief, I realize it’s not entirely true. This belief is also not serving me—it’s keeping me from reaching my full potential. When we replace limiting beliefs with empowering truths, we open ourselves up to new opportunities.

Identifying Limiting Beliefs in Real-Time

Pay attention to the judgments you make about others; often, these reflect hidden judgments about yourself. If you catch yourself thinking, “They aren’t working hard enough,” it might reveal how you feel about your own efforts.

Cultivating Alignment and Integrity

True alignment means living in a way that is honest with ourselves. I recommend taking Martha Beck’s “30-Day Integrity Challenge” from her book, The Way of Integrity. For 30 days, commit to speaking and acknowledging your truth—not just to others, but to yourself. You’ll start to notice how often you hold back, and where limiting beliefs might be guiding your actions instead of your true self.

Awareness is the first step toward changing any belief. With this awareness, we can make choices that allow us to show up fully, free from the doubts that have held us back.

Are you ready to question your beliefs and step into alignment? Start today by asking yourself: Is this belief 100% true?
